Newark Symphonic Winds to honor veterans, soldiers

To conclude its first season, the Newark Symphonic Winds is holding a summer concert on Saturday. The symphony’s fifth concert since it was formed a year ago features a variety of music, from George Gershwin, Elvis Presley and John Phillip Sousa to bagpipes. The 40-member symphony will also be paying a special tribute to veterans and members of the U.S. armed forces. Read the complete story.

NEWARK — For more than a decade, Manuel Garcia has found opportunities to perform in a band. But as he prepares to graduate from San Jose State University — and bid farewell to the school’s marching band — Garcia must look for a new venue to showcase his artistic talents. He is hoping that Newark soon will have a community band, under the leadership of Kevin Hanson, one of three band directors teaching in the school district. Read the complete story.
